Police were called to War Memorial Park on Friday after an unknown man approached a child.
A witness told the Gazette that the incident happened near the exercise equipment.
"The man asked the child to come with him and do something," the witness said.
"The child said no and ran off back to their parents sitting nearby."
Police confirmed that they were called, but that no arrests were made.
"We were called just before 7pm on July 17 to a report of a man approaching a boy at War Memorial Park," a spokesman for Hampshire police said.
"The boy returned to his mother and officers attended the area and carried out a search, but no man was located."
