VETERANS proudly marked the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a poignant ceremony.
Representatives from the Colchester branch of the Royal Air Forces Association and the Association of Ex Members of the Royal Observer Corps headed to the town's war memorial in High Street on Sunday.
The standards of both associations were also proudly on show.
The battle, which was fought entirely in the air, is considered a key turning point in the Second World War.
Nearly 1,500 pilots died in the battle which took place between July and October in 1940.
Despite the combat lasting three months, September 20 is recognised as Battle of Britain Day because of a significant victory by the RAF.
Judy Alden chairman of Colchester Branch Royal Air forces Association said it was important to commemorate the event despite the unprecedented circumstances.
She said: "A short citation was read and wreaths representing both organisations were laid at the memorial.
"It was a special day, and this seems to be the only recognition of the event in Colchester, members of the public even thanked us for remembering, which we appreciated."
