Andover firefighters were drafted in to help at the scene of a serious house fire near Winchester this afternoon.

Crews raced to Mortimer Close, Kings Worthy, to tackle to blaze that engulfed two properties. 

In pictures shared to Facebook, a huge water pool had been erected in front of the smouldering homes as officers took charge to quell the inferno.

Describing the incident, a spokesman for Andover Fire Station wrote: "We were mobilised this afternoon to an incident at Kings Worthy. 

"Our control room received numerous calls about this incident. When crews arrived on scene, the house was fully involved in fire."

The operation saw crews from all over Hampshire flood in to help with engines travelling from Whitchurch, Winchester, Sutton Scotney and Eastleigh.

Water carriers travelled up from Fareham and Ringwood to assist.

The commanding officer told the Advertiser's sister paper, the Daily Echo, that the house had been severely damaged and is now uninhabitable.

The fire is believed to have started in the roof of the house.

One female resident was at home when the fire started but no-one has been injured.

Councillor Malcolm Prince said he saw thick black smoke coming from the area, and that the fire started at about 12pm.
