Fire crews in Andover have warned the public to be take care when cooking after being called to a domestic fire at the weekend.

Both fire crews from Andover were mobilised to a property after receiving a call from a young girl.

At the property, they found that a saucepan was on fire after having been left unattended. Fortunately, the fire was contained within the pan when the crews arrived.

On arriving, the crews removed the pan from the property and cleared the smoke using a fan.

In a statement, Andover Fire Station said praised the girl's response, saying: “We'd like to thank her for her quick reactions and having the confidence to call 999.

“Please be mindful when cooking. Stay safe.”

According to Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service, the majority of house fires occur in the kitchen, with 89 per cent happening while individuals were in a different room.

They recommend that cooking is never left unattended, reminding members of the public to switch off the oven or hob when finished cooking, and take pans off the heat.

Electrical leads, tea towels and clothing should be kept away from the oven and hob, which should be cleaned regularly as a build-up of grease and fat can catch fire whilst cooking.
