GHOSTS, ghouls, pumpkins, and zombies - the Halloween season comes with its fair share of cliché.
Most historians trace its roots back to Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival during which the veil between our world and the ‘Otherworld’ was believed to thin to the point of vanishing.
The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, celebrated their new year on that day.
As Christianity spread across Europe, in the eighth century Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as the newly-named All Saint’s Day (or All Hallows’ Day).
It was celebrated with a familiar array of bonfires, costumes and merriment.
The previous night became All Hallow’s Eve, its spookiness very much intact.
Each month, we set our members our camera club a theme, and at the end of that month we then print the best photos in the paper, as well as on our website.
With Halloween just around the corner, this month we challenged them to share their best ‘spooky’ snapshots from around Andover and nearby - and they once again delivered.
It’s free and easy to join. Simply search ‘Andover Advertiser Camera Club’ on Facebook.
Congratulations to everyone who had their picture printed this month.
November’s theme will be announced on the page soon.
