A MAN whose van hit a telegraph pole on Andover Road near Faberstown has been detained after police chased him fleeing from a drug arrest.

On Friday, December 11, at around 9.45pm, police chased a Ford Transit van after a man who had been arrested after failing a drug test fled the scene.

The vehicle hit a telegraph pole on the Andover Road and the driver was detained after trying to run from the vehicle.

The 27-year-old male driver was further arrested on suspicion for failure to stop and dangerous driving.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Shortly after 9.45pm, the van was followed from Amesbury along the A303 eastbound.

“We were supported by colleagues from Hampshire Police who successfully deployed a stinger device as he drove along the A342 towards Ludgershall.”

Peter Unwin, of Down At The Chippie on Andover Road, told the Advertiser that he saw two unmarked police cars “flying past my shop, about 5 minutes apart” at around 10pm.

One resident of Andover Road, who asked not to be named, also witnessed the incident from his window.

He said: “So Friday night at around 10pm we saw lots of police lights outside the window. About 10:30 we see two unmarked cars race up the road. Next thing they are flying back down towards Ludgershall.

“We see them try to box in a white van, which lost control and swerved into an electrical pole outside our house. Sparks fly but power stays on.

“We hear them cuff someone but can't see them.

“Fire brigade turn up and start making everything safe."

Wiltshire police are appealing to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident to call them on 101, quoting log number 318 of Friday, December 11.
