CONCERNS were raised about a man at a bridge over the M3 this afternoon - but police attended the scene and have confirmed he is 'safe'.

All lanes of the M3 between Junction 4A (Fleet) and 5 (Hook) were closed in both directions this afternoon due to an 'ongoing police incident', leading to 'heavy delays'.

AA traffic news said the incident was first reported at 15:13: "Road closed and queueing traffic due to police incident on M3 both ways from J5 A287 (Hook) to M3 (Fleet Services). Police have confirmed both sides are closed, Affecting traffic between London and Basingstoke."

Police confirmed that they were called to the scene after 2pm, as concerns were raised about a man's welfare.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We were called at 2.16pm following concerns raised for the welfare of a man on a bridge over the M3 near Hook.

"The road was closed while police attended, but this has since been reopened."

Police said that the man is "safe and with emergency services", but that they cannot provide any further update at this time
