Covid cases continued to rise in Basingstoke town region in the week leading to January 15, while the number of cases saw a sharp decline in rural areas during the same period.

According to government data, coronavirus cases remained above the national average in areas like Popley, Basingstoke Central, Black Dam & Eastrop, Houndmills & Oakridge, Daneshill & Little Basing, Kings Furlong and Viables.

However, the situation was much better in outer areas of Basingstoke and Deane council, with Woolton Hill, Burghclere & Bishops Green, Overton & North Waltham, Whitchurch & Ashmansworth and Kingsclere & Heath End reporting fewer number of cases.

Popley reported the highest rolling rate in the area at 963.1, which is more than double the national average. It also reported 134 new cases over the period, 49 more than the previous week.

At nine, Woolton Hill, Burghclere & Bishops Green reported the least number of new cases in the council.

An interactive map on the government website shows just how many people have tested positive for the virus in each area of the county over the seven-day period up to Friday, January 15.

The map allows users to type in their postcode and see how many cases were reported in their area and if it has increased or decreased from the week before. The darker the colour on the image, the more positive test results have been recorded.

The map highlights which areas of the nation have three or more confirmed cases of the virus and colour co-coordinates the areas by how many cases they have.

The map is split up into Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs), which are generally smaller than council wards and are based on population, rather than geographical area.
