A fire near Winton School caused roads to be closed this afternoon as fire crews attended the scene.

Fire engines from Andover and Sutton Scotney were called to Admirals Way at 15:10 on Monday, March 1, after a motorhome caught fire.

London Road was also closed during this period after a fire started in the vehicle’s engine compartment. The engine was totally destroyed in the fire, while the flames spread to a quarter of the vehicle before it was extinguished.

Road users were redirected by the fire service during this time.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus and a hose reel to fight the blaze, before a stop was called at 16:01 after it was successfully extinguished. It is not yet known what started the fire.

Advice from UK Fire Service Resources suggests that to avoid vehicle fires, wiring should be checked routinely for any sign of wear or damage, with alterations to the system recommended to be conducted by qualified mechanics.

Fuel connections should also be checked, while having a small fire extinguisher in the vehicle is also recommended to help fight a fire if it should occur.

The news follows fire teams from Andover, Overton, Sutton Scotney, Salisbury and Eastleigh being called to the Balksbury schools at the weekend after a dishwasher caught fire.
