A 26-year-old man from Andover has been arrested after allegedly driving head-on at a police car overnight.

Police say the man was involved in a pursuit after performing the dangerous overtaking manoeuvre on the A342 between Ludgershall and Andover in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers were forced to perform an emergency stop to avoid a collision, and dog units from Wiltshire Police were called in to hunt for the man.

During the pursuit, the car turned into a field next to Privet Lane near Appleshaw, where police say he dumped the vehicle and fled on foot.

He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen of breath, and remains in custody.

It took place just before 1.30 this morning.
