THREE people have been taken to hospital after a candle caused a fire inside an Andover home.

Fire crews were called to a property in Herons Rise just before midnight on Easter Monday after a candle set fire to the wall while the family were asleep.

They have spoken to The Advertiser about their dramatic escape and praised their neighbours for coming to their aid.

Freya said she was woken up to the sound of the fire alarm and went to investigate when she discovered a fire had broken out.

“We normally keep a candle in the corner behind the door. Normally, we keep it in a glass holder but this was the one time we didn’t, Thankfully the fire alarm woke me up,” she said.

The candle had set alight to the wall and Freya pulled back the door to find a “little wall of fire” licking up the edge of the property.

Her shouts woke up partner Ryan, who attempted to smother the flames with a duvet, which sadly didn’t work.

“I shouted for everyone to get out,” said Freya. “It was such a blur after that. I don’t know what we did.”

Freya, Ryan, and one-year old Kaiden managed to get out of the house quickly, as well as their dogs. By this point, neighbours became aware of the fire.
