A coroner has ruled that Alex Sartain died after a high-speed pursuit by police, following which he struck a tree at 145mph.

Coroner Jason Pegg ruled at Winchester Coroners' Court on Wednesday, April 21 that Mr Sartain had died following a road traffic collision on the A343 north of Hurstbourne Tarrant.

Having attacked Cllr James Nash earlier that day, Mr Sartain had been spotted leaving Faberstown by a police helicopter.

Following a short pursuit by police, he had accelerated away from these vehicles, and passed through Hurstbourne Tarrant. Shortly afterwards, on the A343 at Doiley Hill, Mr Sartain was travelling at 145mph when he struck a glancing blow to a car on the road.

Shortly afterwards, the bike left the road, with a "large explosion" seen by witnesses. Police officers arriving on the scene shortly afterwards found that Mr Sartain had suffered "catastrophic" injuries, with a post-mortem finding he would have died instantly.
