Two sisters have raised over £200 for a cancer charity in memory of their aunt after having their hair cut.

The Hughes sisters, Kendyll, 6, and Tylah, 12, collectively had over 20 inches of hair cut off in order to raise money and provide the raw materials for the Little Princess Trust, a charity which provides wigs to children who have undergone cancer treatment. They had the cut in front of their grandmother, who suffered from hair loss during her own cancer treatment.

The girls have now raised £220 for the charity, and are hoping to get even more by the time their fundraiser closes.

The pair decided to do the challenge after losing their aunt to cancer two years ago, while their grandmother was treated for cancer but has since recovered. During treatment, their grandmother lost her hair, and so they wanted to help build confidence for others.

Mum Paula said: “Their nan lost a lot of her hair, and they have had friends that have done it, so they decided to do it too as they saw how it affected their nan. When they told us, we [their parents] were proud of them and we’re not going to stop them.

Ahead of the cut, Tylah told the Advertiser: “I’m nervous because I don’t normally have my hair up but I’m also excited and I’m glad I’m doing something to help other people.

“They might feel very self-conscious about losing their hair and I would like to help them feel more confident about themselves and improve their self-esteem.”

Kendyll added that it was going to be “exciting”.

They had their hair cut on Wednesday, July 21, with Kendyll having 11 inches taken off, while her older sister had 10 inches removed.
