A 62-year-old man is fighting life-threatening injuries after he was assaulted at Tesco Extra on River Way in Andover last night.

Police said the victim has been taken to hospital with a head injury and his condition is currently described as life threatening.

A 27-year-old man from Andover has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, according to police.

An 18-year-old man, a 28-year-old man, and a 36-year-old woman, all from Andover, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

The incident occurred at 9.20pm yesterday (Thursday).

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary told the Advertiser: “We are currently investigating an assault on a 62-year-old man on River Way, Andover.

“The incident happened at around 9.20pm yesterday, 29 July, outside the Tesco store.

“The victim has been taken to hospital with a head injury, his condition is currently described as life threatening.

“Officers will be in the area conducting enquiries to establish the exact circumstances.

“A 27-year-old man from Andover has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

“An 18-year-old man, a 28-year-old man, and a 36-year-old woman, all from Andover, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“All four remain in custody at this time.”

Police are also seeking information from the public regarding the incident.

A police cordon has been erected outside Tesco Extra in Andover on Friday morning with officers on the scene.

Tesco Extra remains open to shoppers, with customers able to exit through both sides of the shop due to the cordon.

Tesco has been contacted for a comment.
