Residents and community leaders have been left shocked after a man has been left fighting for his life after being attacked outside Tesco.

The thoughts of members of the public across Andover are with a 62-year-old man, who is currently in University Hospital Southampton with a “life threatening” head injury. Four are currently in custody following the assault, which took place on July 29 at around 9:20pm.

Here is the timeline of events as they are known so far:

Around 21:15, July 29 – A 62-year-old man sustained a serious head injury after being assaulted outside Tesco Extra in Andover.

21:16 – Emergency services are first called to the scene, with South Central Ambulance Service receiving a call to the store car park on River Way. Two ambulance crews and the critical care car from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

21:20 – Police officers are dispatched to the scene. Four individuals would subsequently be arrested in connection with the incident.

A 27-year-old man from Andover has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, while an 18-year-old man, a 28-year-old man, and a 36-year-old woman, also all from Andover, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They remain in custody at the time of writing.

After 21:20 – The 62-year-old is assessed and treated by medics at the scene as ambulances arrive. Witnesses report seeing a large emergency service presence at the scene, before the man is taken by ambulance to University Hospital Southampton.

July 30 – A police presence remains at the scene as the store opens to the public. An area of the car park in front of the store continues to be cordoned off by police, with two gazebos, along with a wheelchair and a medical privacy screen, inside the police line.

The 62-year-old remains in hospital at this time, fighting for his life, as police continue investigations into the incident.
