THE MAYOR of Andover has planted a tree in memory of all victims of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cllr Barbara Long joined fellow councillors and residents who had volunteered to the pandemic response at Vigo Road Recreation Ground on Saturday where they each took it in turns to help plant the tree, donated by Test Valley Borough Council.

Saying a few words before the planting ceremony, Cllr Long said: “This is our tree, this is the town council’s tree, this is the town’s tree.

“This is to make loved ones that we have lost during the pandemic.”

She also praised the work of volunteers, saying without the likes of the Andover Isolation Group or Unity, “we would have been in dire straits”.

Speaking to the Advertiser after the ceremony, Cllr Long added: “I am really pleased that so many people turned up. Everybody who came has helped to plant the tree.

“I felt it important that we plant a tree here in Andover. It is really important that it is not just me on my own but that it is something that is part of the town.”

In front of the tree is a plaque that reads: “This Oak tree has been donated by Test Valley Borough Council and planted to remember those who lost their lives to the Covid-19 pandemic and to gratefully recognise all the many volunteers who gave their time and support to help others.”

After the tree was planted, Reverend Andy Fitchet, minister at Andover Methodist Church, led the group in a moment of reflection.
