SEPTEMBER'S Childhood Cancer Awareness Month has been brought to a close at the Wellington Eagles and Wellington Lions primary schools with a mufti day and bake sale to raise money for two cancer charities.

Pupils at the two schools, in Ludgershall and Tidworth respectively, raised money for The Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group and Macmillan Cancer Support and achieved an impressive £1094.28.

The cakes were donated by pupils and their families and pupils at the two schools could choose to come in green and gold themed mufti, as gold is the colour of childhood cancer.

The fundraising was even more poignant for pupils as they have supported fellow year four pupil, Nicole, who was diagnosed with a pilocytic astrocytoma brain tumour in 2019. Nicole has recently returned to school after having two years off and 13 surgeries.

Pupils have also spent September learning more about cancer, with activities including circle time, colouring activities, listening to children's stories, drawing and making.

Claire Addis, executive headteacher of the Wellington Eagles and Wellington Lions Primary Academies, said: “This was our first fundraising day of this academic year and the response from pupils and their families was fantastic; it was wonderful to see so many friends and families in school to support a cause which resonates with us all.

“After the restrictions of the last couple of years, it was a joy to see the school come alive as the cake sales opened and for everyone to come together to catch up, chat, share smiles and support. Year 6 pupils were in charge of manning the stalls and they did an amazing job. We definitely have some future entrepreneurs in our midst as they haggled the best price for their cakes!”

The money raised will be split equally between the two charities, with each receiving £547.14.
