SIX fire engines rushed to tackle a blaze in a Hampshire village home which left the roof 'destroyed'.

Firefighters were called to the detached property in Sheepwash Lane, Newtown Common shortly after 9am on Saturday.

At the height of the incident, six fire engines and two water carriers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service were in attendance, with crews wearing breathing apparatus and using jets to tackle the fire.

The stop message was given at around 4.45pm and crews began to return to station, with one fire engine and one water carrier left on scene until 9pm to dampen down and deal with hotspots.

No one was injured but the house suffered severe damage, with the roof destroyed.

A fire investigator has since attended the scene to try and establish the cause of the blaze
