A BEACON lighting ceremony is kicking off a weekend of events to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Ludgershall Town Council has announced plans to light a beacon to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The beacon lighting will take place on Thursday, June 2, at The Recreation Ground, Deweys Lane, Ludgershall.

The beacon is just one of the over 2,022 beacons being lit by charities, communities and faith groups around the UK.

Councillor Owen White, Mayor of Ludgershall, said: “We are proud to be part of this momentous celebration.

“It is only appropriate that this unique milestone in history is marked with beacons and music.

“We are honoured to be part of this special event for Her Majesty, The Queen’s 70th year as our Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth on her Platinum Jubilee.”

The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm; following the lighting, the song “Song for the Commonwealth” will be sung.

The beacon lighting ceremony kicks off a weekend of events celebrating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, with a 1950s street party on Ludgershall High Street taking place Friday, June 3, from 1pm - 5pm; this will be followed on Sunday, June 5, by a Royal Thank You Party with live music at the Sports and Social Club at 1pm – 5pm.

This ceremony is being held as part of a celebratory event organised by The Queen’s Jubilee Beacons and Associated Activities.

Alongside the over 2,000 beacons being lit around the UK, beacons will be lit in all 54 Commonwealth capitals, with a Principal Beacon lighting taking place in a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace, which will take the form a lighting installation with The Queen’s Green Canopy ‘Tree of Trees’ sculpture and projections onto the front of the palace.

Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Pageant Master of The Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Beacons said: “Building on a long tradition of lighting beacons to mark significant royal celebrations, thousands of beacons will be lit across the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and will enable local communities to join together to pay tribute to Her Majesty as part of the official programme of events.

“The Queen has lit up our lives for 70 years through her dedicated service and commitment.

“We are honoured to be part of this special event for Her Majesty, The Queen’s 70th year as our Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth on her Platinum Jubilee.”
