A PENSIONER has celebrated turning 105 by reuniting with her son after Covid forced them apart for two years.

Delighted Florence Barrett was surprised by her son Graham, who lives in France, when he joined in her birthday celebrations at Wilton Manor care home in Southampton.

Florence - who has four brothers and three sisters - was treated to two cakes, with a party but on Bupa-run home's staff, her friends and family.

She also received a card from the Queen marking her birthday.

Asked how it felt reaching the milestone age, the former Post Office and Marks and Spencer's worker said: "It was a lovely day and I felt very spoilt.

"To receive a card from the Queen was also very exciting – I wonder if she is lucky enough to get two cakes on her birthday.”

The party was organised by the home's activities team Debra Hughes, Maria Wort and Laura Thomson.

Flo and those celebrating her birthday enjoyed a barbecue and cakes.

Chef Chris Griffiths made one cake, and a flower-inspired cake was made by Marcela Neagoe, the home's deputy manager.

Manager Perpetual Mafunga said: “The whole team were delighted to be a part of Flo’s special day, as she is dearly loved by everyone at Wilton Manor.

"It was especially heart-warming to see her reunited with her son Graham – I don’t think there was a dry eye amongst the team when we saw them embrace.”

Flo - who raised her family with husband Alfred George - enjoys listening to music, socialising with residents, and reminiscing about travelling Europe with her husband.

Activities co-ordinator Debra said: “We always love going above and beyond for our residents, so Flo’s birthday was a perfect chance to make her feel like a Queen for the day.”

The home is in Wilton Avenue in Southampton.

It's currently rated as Good by the Care Quality Commission, with a rating of outstanding for its effectiveness.
