As Bembridge Sailing Club prepares to celebrate Easter weekend, with racing on Good Friday and Easter Saturday, for the Vernon’s Easter Egg Trophy, this weekend also saw on-the-water action, over two days.
With a westerly at between 12 and 20 knots and wind against tide, conditions were interesting on Saturday, March 23, as thirteen crews set out to compete for the Spring Plate.
In the first race, Bruce Huber was first round the windward marks, while Mark Downer, who did not start well and was in catch up mode, still managed to finish third.
The second saw rain and a stronger breeze. This time, it was Mark Downer who passed the windward marks first, before further extending his lead. He had already finished when a squall came in, and the anemometer showed gusts of 29 knots.
The final race of the day saw Bruce Huber’s bright green spinnaker evident, at the front of the fleet.
On Sunday, fifteen boats started the first race, but had to be recalled.
When racing started again, Downer’s grey spinnaker was the first to fly, once round the spreader.
Race two saw Downer and Huber battle it out, but it was Downer who finished ahead.
He also took the final race and the Spring Plate, finishing with six points.
