THE council has shared an update on a major town centre development following the demolition of the old Woolworths site.

Work is currently being carried out to create a new park in Kidderminster feature sloping grass terraces, trees, planting, seating, walls and new lighting.

The former Woolworths site, which was closed in 2008, was demolished along with other shops including the old Megavalue, Poundland, and Sigma Aquatics on Worcester Street, to make way for the open space. A children's play area and a pavilion building planned to be used for a café, are also set to be built.

Now, Wyre Forest District Council has confirmed that the first part of the project is complete and that the council is currently "reviewing tender returns."

A spokesperson for the council said: “The first part of the project, which involved the demolition of the existing buildings is now complete.

"The council is currently reviewing tender returns following a procurement exercise to select a contractor to deliver the final stage of the project which will involve the construction of the new public realm.

"Work is programmed to start in the coming weeks.”

The Kidderminster Drone Facebook page has previously filmed the progress of the work.

Wyre Forest District Council wants to improve the appearance and connectivity of the area.

North Worcestershire Economic Development and Regeneration submitted a planning application back in August 2023, with funding for the project being provided by the government's Future High Streets Fund (FHSF).

Wyre Forest District Council's planning committee agreed to approve the proposal in December 2023.
