A CHARITY golf day held every year in memory of a man from Andover raised more than £10,000 - bringing its running total to more than £40,000.

On August 16, 76 golfers took their tees for a 9am shotgun start at Leckford Golf Course for the start of the sixth annual Bob Tulloch Charity Golf Day.

The participants mainly came from the Andover area with Andover Golf Club, Tidworth Golf Club and the Clatford Arms Golf Society being strongly represented.

The common cause was to celebrate the life of Bob Tulloch (known to most of the golfers) whilst raising money for the Countess of Brecknock Hospice Trust.

(Image: Gid Wells) More than 20 companies, mostly local to Andover, sponsored the event, helping to pay for the course hire, prizes and other expenses. Further funds were raised by the raffle and auction which took place at the Clatford Arms after golf.

Bob was born in 1942 and died on August 23, 2017 of oesophagus cancer, spending his last few weeks in the hospice, where he received the very best of care from the nurses.

Bob, who lived on his own in Windsor Road, Andover, was always up for a laugh and had the rare ability to take the mickey out of himself for the amusement of others.

He liked a beer or two and drank at the Anton Arms, the Foresters and the Clatford Arms, where he was a keen member of the Clatford Arms Golf Society.

Friend and co-organiser Gid Wells said: "The funds raised at the golf day have always bettered themselves year on year. This started in 2017 with £3,083 raised, followed by 2018 - £4,245 and 2019 - £6,700. 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to Covid, then 2022's total was £7,000.

"Last year we managed £9,520. So, the target for this year was to exceed £10,000, giving a running total to date in excess of £40,000.

"Amazingly, we managed to raise £12,750 which was testament to the effort made by everyone involved, as well as the generosity of the sponsors."

A cheque was presented to representatives from the Countess of Brecknock Hospice - a specialist palliative care unit within Andover War Memorial Hospital - at The Clatford Arms on Wednesday, August 28.
