A TIDWORTH based army doctor has set a world record for rowing around Great Britain when he crossed the finish line in the Solent on 1 July.
Captain Hamish Reid, the Regimental Medical Officer for 22 Engineer Regiment, together with Capt Nick Dennison of the Royal Army Medical Corps at Bovington, set off in mid-May aiming to become the first pair to row non-stop and unsupported around the British mainland.
As they rowed back across the finish line on the Solent, near the entrance to Lymington Yacht Haven, they were greeted by delighted family and friends on a flotilla of boats which escorted them back in.
They set off on the challenge on 12 May in their 24ft ocean going rowing boat, Komale and battled high seas, fierce winds and strong tides on a journey of more than 2,100 miles, which many said could not be achieved.
In setting the world record the doctors aim to raise £20,000 for both the ABF (the soldiers’ charity) and Help for Heroes.
