REMEMBRANCE in Whitchurch continues with a series of unique events organised by a resident.
The Weir resident Graham Burgess has been co-ordinating special initiatives under a project called Serving The People designed to honour the 64 Whitchurch soldiers who died during the First World War.
For Remembrance weekend, an exhibition at the Gill Nethercott Centre, in Winchester Street, will be held from 10.30am to 4.40pm on Saturday and Sunday, showing the lives of the Whitchurch soldiers in the town.
At 3pm on November 11, the National Pigeon Racers Association will release pigeons from Whitchurch Silk Mill’s lawn carrying messages, one to the Queen and another to Bletchley Park.
Whitchurch’s oldest resident Eileen Knight, 103, will do the honours of writing the message for the Queen on paper from Overton Mill.
Last weekend a historic Thornycroft vehicle made a journey from Basingstoke to Whitchurch carrying 64 OXO cubes donated by Morrisons, to represent each of the men lost. A ‘special meal’ was also hosted at Longmeadow Sports and Social Club on Sunday, November 4, bringing the community together for a meal created by Basingstoke College of Technology students with First World War-time ingredients.
