AS the country goes to the polls in a matter of hours, Basingstoke residents have a choice of five candidates to cast their vote for.

The seat is currently held by Conservative, Maria Miller, who has represented the constituency since 2005.

The former culture secretary is being contested by Kerena Marchant (Labour), Sashi Mylvaganam (Lib Dem), Jonathan Jenkin (Green) and Alan Stone (Independent).

Who are the candidates?

Maria Miller – Conservative

Former cabinet minister Maria Miller has been Basingstoke's member of parliament since 2005. Mrs Miller is vowing to get Brexit done on behalf of her constituency, which mirrored the general public in 2016 by voting 52 to 48 in favour of exiting the European Union.

Mrs Miller has also promised to deliver a new hospital for the town if Conservatives win the election. Read more about Maria here

Kerena Marchant – Labour

A television producer and activist, Kerena Marchant has been running an anti-austerity focused campaign. Ms Marchant has pledged to invest in public services including Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. Read more about her here

Sashi Mylvaganam – Liberal Democrat

Surrey County Councilllor Sashi Mylvaganam said if he is elected, he will be fighting to stop Brexit from happening. The Surrey-based businessman said more investment is needed in Basingstoke. Read more about him here
