TRIBUTES continue to pour in for a retired doctor “who did incredible things” during her life.

A long-standing friend of Dr Judith Darmady OBE, Mary John, 82, from Norwich, recalled a significant moment when they first met in the early 1960s in London.

“We shared a flat in the early 60s with two other friends in Lennox Gardens, Knightsbridge. We had a super time. Judith was studying to be a doctor at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

“I have kept in touch with her ever since. Judith attended my 80th birthday party in Fakenham Racecourse two years ago.

“She was always happy and had time for everyone. She was a lovely person,” Ms John added.

Dr Darmady OBE passed away at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital on Monday, April 13 at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital after contracting coronavirus.

The esteemed medical professional, who was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list in 2010, was famous in Basingstoke for her work.

She was the chair of two charities, the Ungureni Trust in Romania and United Aid for Azerbaijan.

Dr Darmady had a long career as a paediatrician at Basingstoke hospital before retiring in 1995.

“We were just good friends. We lived a long way from each other and stayed in touch by sending birthday cards and making visits.

“She was a marvellous person. I did not realise that she would be on the news. She never made out to be so important. I am amazed,” Ms John said.

Cllr for Hatch Warren and Beggarwood, Dan Putty shared his personal condolences after heading of the “saw news” of Dr Darmady passing.

He wrote: “I personally have been devastated by the sad news of Dr Judith Darmady. She commanded the respect, love and friendship of most people in Basingstoke and Deane.

“She was a consummate professional and discharged her duties with great passion and gained respect of one and all.

“I was privileged to know her at the time my wife Julie worked with her and she was always happy to see me at events and I had great warm greetings from her.

“I will always value this wonderful great generous lady in my heart. May she rest in peace.

“I know it may be difficult to attend her funeral, but I hope a memorial will be appropriate at the right time post this Covid-19 era.

“She deserves a memorial befitting for her service professionalism and friendship to one and all. She will be missed by all especially Julie and me.”
