A RESIDENT has captured the moment on video when a car was set on fire last night.

The video shows smoke coming off a Vauxhall Astra on Woolhampton Drive in Basingstoke.

Police were called to the scene just before 10.30pm.

Resident, Glen Marsh, 55, from Priestley Road, said: "I saw blue lights shortly after 10pm.

"When I got up to make a drink at 10.30pm, I saw the fire engine there and heard the noise coming from there too."

A police spokesman said: "The incident is being treated as arson and an investigation is underway.

"Officers are looking at the circumstances to see if this incident is linked to any other active investigation."

Earlier that day, two men were arrested in that same street following an altercation which saw police seize a knife and a metal bar.

It is unknown if these two incidents are connected.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: "One fire engine from Basingstoke was mobilised at 10.22pm to Woolhampton Drive.

"There was a Vauxhall Astra on fire. The car was 100 per cent destroyed internally by fire and extinguished using a hose reel.

"Police were requested and the stop message came in at 10.46pm."
