THE PUBLIC are being urged to have their say on one of the region's conservation areas.

The Old Basing Conservation Area is being appraised by the borough council, with the public being asked to help them decide how best to preserve the historic significance in the area.

The conservation area was first put in place in 1973, and covers an area with a high historic and archaeological interest.

Cabinet member for planning, infrastructure and the natural environment, Cllr Mark Ruffell, said: "It is important that the interests giving Old Basing its very special character are properly identified and preserved for the future.

"Despite the pandemic, it is vital residents are still able to give their views and so I am pleased that the appropriate measures have been put in place so information about the draft proposals can be accessed safely, whether that's online or in person."

The area is split into six 'character areas' - which include areas focused around Oliver's Battery, Basing House, the River Loddon and the Basingstoke Canal.

The village dates back millions of years - with evidence suggesting settlements in Old Basing from the Stone and Bronze Ages.

Perhaps most famously, the ruins of Basing House saw multiple sieges in the English Civil War, which resulted in a Parliamentary victory.

The consultation will continue until October 28, and you can also see hard copies of the document at Old Basing Parish Council and at Basingstoke Discovery Centre.
