Whether it's complaints about parking, traffic on the roads or too many tourists, sometimes day-trippers can be a little hard to please.

We know Hampshire is home to some of the most picturesque and historic beauty spots that that attract thousands of visitors each year.

Yet according to some TripAdvisor reviewers, some were so underwhelmed by our county's beauty spots that they left them the worst possible rating.

Here are some of the most frank reviews from people who went to amazing places but sadly appeared to have a terrible time.

New Forest National Park

Known for its beautiful heathland and forest trails where ponies, cattle, donkeys and deer roam free.

But it didn't impress one visitor who rated it with just one star on TripAdvisor and wrote:

“AVOID! Sat in a traffic jam for a hours to get through Lyndhurst. Finally got to Brockenhurst to go to the river. Overcrowded couldn’t park.

"Went to Hatchett Pond instead. Also overcrowded. Very hot, smelled like something had died near the water. Son got a leech on him. Other son got a tick.

"Cows disturbed our picnic and chased our dog. Poo everywhere and lots of rubbish. Got yelled at for feeding the animals too by a ranger who threatened to fine us, not going to return. Do NOT recommend as a fun day out.”

Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Romsey

A sanctuary of natural beauty, Sir Harold Hillier Gardens offers visitors the perfect escape from all the stresses of the outside world.

Here you can experience nature at its finest whilst exploring the 180 acres of gardens, wildlife and play areas for children. Run as a charity its aim is to conserve, develop and exhibit these world-renowned Gardens and plant collection.

But it wasn't enough to please one visitor who disliked the amount of children.

They wrote: “Yes, we knew it was the school holidays and a Halloween event was being held, but there were far too many undisciplined children shouting, screaming and causing havoc around the gardens.

"Parents didn't seem to have the desire or ability to keep their offspring under control and there was no respect shown to older visitors.

"One girl was constantly blowing a whistle which was particularly annoying and, if anything, her mother seemed to encourage this.”

They thought the gift shop was overpriced which ‘added further insult to injury’ and branded the experience as ‘terrible’.

St Catherine’s Hill, Winchester

A dramatic 220ft climb up St Catherine’s Hill’s wooden stairs reveals showstopping views of Winchester city, as well as the Itchen Valley floodplains and the downland it nestles in. At the summit are the earthworks of an Iron Age fort, buried ruins of the Norman chapel that gives the site its name, and a copse of beech trees.

Apparently the beauty spot was uninspiring for one TripAdvisor reviewer who added: “I enjoyed the middle part but the first section was something of a slog and the experience soon went downhill after that.

“It's a mound. It's round.

“It's reasonably green. From the top, town can be seen.”

The Common, Southampton

This 327-acre wide-open green space in the heart of Southampton is a designated "Site of Special Scientific Interest" and an excellent venue for picnicking, walking and watching wildlife.

But for one reviewer finds this park a ‘terrifying’ place: “It has been overtaken by parkrun, joggers and cyclists. Sadly there is little space for walkers.

“However that is true of Southampton everywhere. The common was a wonderful resource.

“Parkrun is terrifying for pedestrians. They park everywhere in the surrounding area, The noise of thudding feet is terrible.

“It is incredibly sad as its original aim was for local people and dogs to enjoy a walk in the peace of a beautiful natural area of common.”

Eastrop park, Basingstoke

Andover Advertiser: Google Street ViewGoogle Street View

Eastrop Park is a peaceful haven, a few minutes walk from the town centre and Basing View. It has a boating lake, extensive play area, trim trail, and in summer a paddling pool which is extremely popular with families.

Despite this one reviewer is asking people to ‘stay away from this park’ and stated that if the Tripadvisor had the option, they would have been ‘delighted’ to give the ‘dump’ a zero star review.

They said: “We walked through this park on our way to festival place, and as expected, we were met with disgusting, yobby behaviour from groups of teens. They were shouting and causing disruption to passers by, who were simply trying to get on with their day and probably looking forward to leaving this dump of a park.

“The children's splash pool honestly begs belief. It is completely green, with much litter, broken glass and what looks like plants growing inside. I'm surprised they don't offer a complimentary skip the hospital queue card with each visit!”

Winnall Moors Nature Reserve, Winchester

Andover Advertiser: Google Street ViewGoogle Street View

A stone’s throw from Winchester city centre, Winnall Moors nature reserve is a picturesque patchwork of wildflower-rich meadow, pasture and woodland, with a beautiful, clear chalk stream running through its heart.

Whilst the nature reserve is home to all sorts of wildlife one visitor was less than please with the amount of insects.

They left a 1 star ‘terrible’ rating and said: “There are so many Mosquitos that stole my blood that all the prettiness was overshadowed by me scratching myself as if I had fleas for the whole time I was there. I'd have been bitten less if I was in an all you can eat cannibal competition.”

Other ridiculous reviews included a one star terrible review for Lepe Country Park being ‘dusty’ and Queen Elizabeth Country Park being ‘very muddy’.
