A ROMSEY primary school is celebrating after they won a music award for the second year running.

Romsey Abbey C of E Primary School, Church Lane, has become a Music Mark School member which recognises the value schools put on music education.

The award was presented to the Romsey school for their commitment to delivering a broad and balanced curriculum and the nomination was made by Hampshire Music Services.

Music teacher, Marion Maxey, said: "It’s so great that the Abbey School has been recognised for the second year running. Music is a wonderful part of our school life here.

"The children love to sing, play instruments and perform; we are all looking forward to another great year of music making together."

Acting headteacher of Romsey Abbey C of E Primary School, Tom Langford, said: "I am delighted to announce the school has been recognised for its outstanding music for the second year running. We really value the role music has to play in education.

“All children have weekly music lessons and over half of key stage 2 pupils play a musical instrument."

He added children get the chance to learn to play a variety of instruments, such as the "flute, clarinet, piano and violin" and "get chance to play in the school orchestra".

Tom highlighted: "During lockdown we ran regular competitions to keep the children excited about music. Now we are back in school and it’s lovely to hear music being made again.”

The school were thanked by Music Mark for their "hard work to support our collective vision".

Romsey Abbey were also told: "The value that you place on music and your commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum has been recognised and we would like to celebrate it.”

Mr Langford also announced the school's new head boy and girl this week, along with their deputies.

He said: "We have congratulated Jonah, Kristian, Megan and Erin and we know they will be excellent role models for the pupils of our school."

The school discovered they won the award on Monday (September 14).
