A GROUP of Winchester volunteers are hoping to change the lives of adults who cannot read.

The local branch of Read Easy is looking for new students they can help.

It offers free and confidential one to one coaching to adults of all ages.

Since the pandemic, meeting in person has not been possible but many of the reading pairs have continued regular sessions using online methods such as Zoom or Skype.

Alison, pictured with her grandson, learned to read with the group and has since become an ambassador.

She said: “I have gained confidence to read in public and ask questions. In restaurants I can make my own choices and not have to copy some one else’s.

“I have felt brave enough to go to crochet classes and have made a memory quilt for my grandson. Reading is finally a pleasure, not a nightmare.”

There are approximately 8,000 adults in the Winchester area who cannot read at all, or struggle. Everyday tasks such as booking a doctor’s appointment, reading road signs or doing the food shopping can be challenging.

Those interested in becoming a reading coach can call 07731 886036 or email winchester@readeasy.org.uk.

A spokesperson said: “Should you know of anyone who could benefit from the tuition we offer please encourage them to call us on the above number so that we can explain how we might help.”
