ANDOVER’S Saturday adult football league will be running for another season after a collaboration has saved it from folding.

Andover and District Football League, which has been running since 1920, was on the brink of closure after last season saw only six teams play.

But now the tournament is teaming up with Salisbury’s Saturday league to get their clubs playing against each other to boost the competition.

At the annual general meeting the decision was taken to let the 2018/2019 season play on.

League secretary Gordon Hopkins said: “The committee has been looking at virtually every option open to us, and have come up with an innovative plan to combat the low numbers.”

“Salisbury’s Saturday league are in a similar situation as ourselves, so we have proposed a mid-season competition between our clubs and theirs which will give an extra six games against different opposition which answers the problems raised by the clubs.

“All of our clubs are happy with that and commend the league for their ingenuity. There may well be people in our town thinking of putting a team in the local league and this may be just the missing piece in the jigsaw for them!”

Players aged 16-years-old and over are welcome to join.

Last season, the league won Hampshire FA’s Respect Award, for its contribution to grassroots football.
