Cherrett said: “The referee blew for a corner and then 40 seconds later changed his mind and pointed to the spot and then Rory Wood had his standing leg taken away in the area and the referee awarded a free-kick the other way.

“Those two decisions certainly changed the game.”

Whitchurch continued to be on top but were unable to make it count and the side's went in at 0-0 at the break.

Three minutes after the interval, Whitchurch's Charlie Plumbley was adjudged to have fouled Downton Abdul Razek and the player dusted himself down and converted from the spot.

On 51 minutes the home side doubled their advantage as Laurance Larbi fired home from distance.

Just after the hour mark, Whitchurch got themselves back into the game, as Aaron Randall’s cross was headed home by Harry Butler.

Soon after, the Jam Boys felt they should have had a penalty of their own as Rory Wood was brought down in the box, but nothing came of it.

The home side made sure of the three points with a third goal from Downton’s leading goalscorer Robbie Owen.

Cherrett added: “It was disappointing not to get something out of the game.

"We were the better side in the first 45 minutes and they were after the break.”

Despite the loss, Whitchurch are still fifth in the table and entertain lowly Pewsey Vale this Saturday.

the Jam Boys have won their last four home league games scoring 16 times, while Pewsey Vale have won just one Wessex League Division One outing this season.

Whitchurch boss Cherrett will be making sure his side do not take them for granted, as they will be looking to collect all three points to keep their promotion push going as the top four go up this season.
