Andover New Street exited the FA Vase on Saturday after making probably the longest journey in their history for a competitive fixture – to Brixham in Devon.

Brixham defeated Street 2-1 in the second round proper of the tournament.

The home side play in the South West Peninsula League East Division and are currently fourth in the table – four points behind the leaders with a game in hand.

Street were missing players through injury and being cup-tied and got off to the worse possible start by going a goal down inside the opening two minutes.

This was obviously a “big” game for the home club, who attract very good and boisterous support, and the goal certainly roused the home spectators.

It put the visitors on the back foot though the score was unchanged at the interval.

Brixham added a second early in the second half and though Max Allen pulled a goal back for Street with some 30 minutes remaining, the Andover side could not find the equaliser.

This meant, for the second season running, New Street went out at this stage of the competition.

Brixham move into the third round for the second time and if they get a home draw it will be a difficult afternoon for their opponents.

Street can look back on victories over Sherborne Town and Street, both playing at one level higher, and now return to trying to gain promotion in the Wessex League, their main objective for the season.

New Street's Wessex League Cup tie against Downton on Tuesday was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
