ANDOVER New Street extended their lead at the top of the Wessex League Division One to three points after they beat local rivals Whitchurch 3-2 at Longmeadow last Friday.

New Street have a bye week this week with their next game on Tuesday night when they face Whitchurch again this time in an Andover Open Cup quarter-final tie.

Last Friday’s game saw the Whitchurch take the lead thanks to Luke Neller's cross cum shot.

New Street hit back as Callum Sweeney scored on 20 minutes and this was how it stayed to the break.

After the interval, Craig Blakeman gave the visitors the lead from a corner and then Shane Lock made it 3-1 with another shot cum cross which gave New Street a two goal cushion.

The Jam Boys never gave up and with 10 minutes left Taurean Manders scored for the home side to reduce the deficit to one.

The home side then so nearly grabbed a point, but Lloyd Thompson fired over saw New Street won 3-2.

New Street boss John Smith said: "It was just what you would expect from a local derby. We were not at our best, but I was really pleased we got the three points. We now lead by three points, but a lot of teams have games in hand and of course we play Tadley next in the league which is going to be tough.

"On Tuesday night, we have Whitchurch again and I am sure they will be out for revenge."

Whitchurch manager Carl Bennett said: "We played well and could have got something out of the game. We are certainly up for the return."

However, before they face New Street, Whitchurch are away to Laverstock and Ford.
