LEADERS Andover New Street kept themselves on course for promotion from the Wessex League Division One after an excellent 3-1 victory at East Cowes Sports last Saturday.

As other sides at the top start to slip up New Street continue to lead the way and will be looking to maintain their reign at the summit when they entertain Folland Sports on Saturday in a top against bottom clash.

Then on Tuesday night, they have the mouth watering top of the table clash with second placed Christchurch being the visitors, who currently are title favourites, but the top three are promoted this season.

Manager John Smith is fully aware of the importance of every game and said: “It is still so tight at the top and Saturday we have to treat our opponents with respect.

"Nobody is going to give us three points, but I have a full squad to pick from.

"Then on Tuesday we have a massive game for both sides in the promotion battle.

Smith will hope his side can carry on from their victory last Saturday on the island against East Cowes Vics.

New Street took the lead from penalty spot after five minutes, when Zach Neve was brought down by the home side’s centre half. Neve dusted himself down and slotted home.

After this Matt Scott went close to getting a second and Callum Sweeney had a chance cleared off the line.

The visitors added a second as Casson Spencer and Gunner Yates combined for Sweeney to fire home after 24 minutes.

After the interval, the home side caught them on the break as Jordan Browne scored to make it 2-1.

However, New Street were not to be denied the victory as great work down the left by Shane Lock saw Yates smash the ball into the top corner.

After the game Smith said: "Once it got to 3-1, I felt the result was never in doubt. We played with the right attitude from the start to finish and got the three points we deserved."
