SBAT sponsored Arms SMB won their first trophy under the management of Lee Cogan in a hard fought Presidents Cup Final.

Arms SMB went into the game full of confidence having beaten their rivals early on in the season, and the game initially followed a similar script.

After only five minutes a defensive error saw the ball fall to Louis Attrill to smash home.

Then after 15 minutes an audacious free-kick from Callum Sweeney rattled off the bar. It fell at the feet of Ashley Childs who calmly swept home to double the lead.

There was little to concern Arms SMB during the first half, however within five minutes of the second half the game looked somewhat different.

Tidworth striker Luke Cairney, a handful all afternoon, scored two minutes into the half. Three minutes later the game was level when Cairney drilled home beautifully from 25 yards.

The Arms had been rocked, however it was a credit to them that they again found a foot hold in the game.

Childs set Attrill free, and when he was bundled over in the box on the hour the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Vinnie Rusher duly converted with that trusty left foot and Arms SMB again had the lead.

The game was seemingly petering out, with the industrious Sweeney and Max Allen holding things together in the middle of the park, and Mark Keogh, Lewis Alderman, Aaron Jeffery and Rusher defending comfortably. There was however a late sting in the tail.

With only two minutes left Cairney went down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, deeming Alderman to have clipped him. Tidworth converted and an unlikely period of extra time was in order.

Arms SMB were out on their feet through injuries, illness and players completing their sixth game in eight days.

They held strong and soaked up all that Tidworth had to offer.

The drama of penalties ensued, and when George Baxter saved Tidworth’s third penalty after conversions from Rusher and Nic Turpin it was advantage Arms. However a miss by Ollie levelled proceedings.

Cairney then stood up to take Tidworth's fourth. A sublime save from Baxter put Arms SMB in touching distance of glory once again.

Sweeney converted, giving captain Jazz Beavis the chance to win the match. He obliged, emphatically smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

Man of the Match was awarded to Max Allen before Beavis lifted the trophy, a trophy which Cogan will be hoping to be the first of three cups this season.

Cogan said “We started brilliantly and were rarely troubled in the first half, but that start to the second half really put us back on our heels.”

“We showed unbelievable character to retake the lead and then battle through extra time after that late sucker punch. It really is testament to the players, many of whom were carrying knocks today.”

“We’ll have a little celebration tonight, but we won’t be resting on our laurels, we are looking for more silverware this season.”
