AFTER reading David Borrett’s letter about the Acre Almshouses (Letters, August 10 ‘Do up instead’) it made me put pen to paper to describe how I feel about this subject.
I was born in New Street that now is all altered and our Recreation Ground the same.
So it makes you feel good to look at these old buildings and to know that they are Andover’s.
Keep your hands off these houses and let us please keep that little part of this town that makes you feel good.
I remember another little house in the same place where Luke Bull lived. He was the chimney sweeper and on the side of his house was a board reading:
‘Luke Bull lives here, Attends orders far and near.
With his brush, scraper and machine, He’ll sweep your chimney very clean.
And if it ever should take fire, He’ll put it out at your desire.’
Joyce Reynolds, Bulbery, Abbotts Ann
Editors note: pictured above is Luke Bull’s House (left) with plaque over front door). The church to the right is today the United Reformed Church, East Street.
