I AM writing to complain at the number of shops, restaurants and public buildings in Andover where access for disabled people is almost impossible.

I am an amputee and have to use a motorised power chair to get around.

Some of these buildings have no ramps to gain access, only steps either up or down. I spoke to one shop owner who told me that after speaking to the Town Council he was told that it was his responsibility to provide access to customers and not them.

I wrote to the leader of the Test Valley Borough Council and he asked me to advise him how many buildings are there where access is difficult or impossible. I therefore carried out a survey on my power chair and have so far counted 41 buildings in Andover that do not offer ramps for access.

In fact, one shop selling men’s and ladies clothes has no lift to the men’s section on the first floor.

There are shops in the Chantry Centre where wheelchair access has been made available to disabled people, so why can’t other shops in Andover do the same?
