LEN Gates (Letters September 7) obviously subscribes to the Goebbels school of “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” (and by the way, it is worthwhile looking at the rest of that quotation).

He repeats that hoary old lie, ‘The referendum campaign, particularly by leavers, was filled with misinformation and misleading promises’ etc, etc.

He goes on to repeat that old misinformation ‘the EU club’. The EU is not a club; it is a treaty enshrined process towards ‘ever closer union’ ie a Superstate. Again, he repeats that UK residents in the EU were denied a vote but omits to mentions the circumstances — not all by any means were denied a vote and, in any case, if they have chosen to live continuously in the EU (those that were denied a vote) let them integrate there. Why should they vote to determine the future of us who remain here? But then again, if you can get the result you want then any ploy will do.

We had a democratic vote which gave us the chance to vote for the other option to the one he espouses. The chance we took and voted for, and to borrow from Emiliano Zapata, that of living as Free men (and women) on our feet rather than as directed by the EU as slaves on our knees. He is obviously singing the party song — as is Frances O’Grady, supposedly the defender of the poor and weak through the power of the trades unions. I wonder what she has been promised if she can deliver those she is supposed to protect into the clutches of the zealots of the EU and keep open our shores to the thousands competing for the jobs, homes, schools, hospital places, etc of those same poor and weak that she is paid to protect?
