WHILE debating Brexit with many Remainers, I always find they deny the very nature and aspirations of the European Union. They deny that the EU is a government and that it is taking control of those functions of the UK.

I can quote the sign in the entrance to the EU Parliament visitor centre that states “National sovereignty is the root cause of the most crying evils of our times...

The only final remedy for this supreme and catastrophic evil of our time is a federal union of the peoples..”, written by Philip Kerr, a British diplomat. I can quote “ever closer union” from the Treaty of Rome.

Remainers deny membership of the EU is replacing our ability to govern ourselves and is becoming the government of the UK. They appear to either deny the EU is a government at all or believe two separate institutions can decide the same policies: Westminster and Brussels. They deny membership of the EU is destroying our national governance and effectively with it, our nation state.

I cannot entirely decide whether Remainers are deceiving themselves or simply trying to deceive others. However, deceive they do, which makes their accusations of the same towards Brexiteers hypocritical at best. If we are to have a second referendum, maybe the question could be a little clearer?

“Do the British people want to remain in the European Union, continue transferring their sovereign governance to the EU and abolish the United Kingdoms status of a nation state?” If the debate is honest and also the question, the outcome cannot be contested. This is ultimately a constitutional question and therefore is of the highest importance. Once the decision is made, the minority can either accept the result or emigrate.
