ANDOVER COUNTY BENCH — ASSAULT

Tom ----, of Monxton, was summoned for assaulting Fanny ----, his wife, on the 20th ult.—Complainant, who entered the box with a discoloured eye, said that on the day in question, at 6.30 a.m., before her husband went to work, because she had no food ready for him, as he had spent all his money the week before, he complained. He said he should look after himself in future, when she said she hoped he would. He thereupon took up a pan and struck her on the eye. He had struck her many times before. He was a good man when free from beer, and he had been beastly drunk the night before.—Defendant said he would just as soon go to gaol as go home, and, pleading guilty, was sent to gaol for a month.

NETHER WALLOP — MAN AND HORSE STRUCK BY AEROPLANE

Whilst Mr.George Game was hayraking on his farm near the aerodrome he was the victim of a curious accident. An aeroplane, in which were two men, flew rather low over the field and came right behind him.

Realising instinctively that there was danger about, Mr.Game “ducked” his head, but the plane injured his shoulder, and striking the horse on the head killed it instantly. The airmen alighted and despatched Mr.Game to hospital for his injuries to be attended to.

WHITCHURCH — UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

An interesting little ceremony took place at the Jam Factory, Whitchurch, on September 29, when Mr.George Long, for many years Managing Director, introduced the new management to the staff and work-people.

Lt-Col.H.Brookhouse, M.V.O., and Mr.S.N.Howell have purchased an interest in this old-established local industry, and have been appointed as joint managing director.

Mr.George Long has resigned his office as managing director, but remains with the firm as Technical Director.

In a short speech, Lt-Col.H.Brookhouse, said he hoped the existing staff would remain with the Firm for many years to come, and work happily together as a team to make the Long products even better known in the future.

Both gentlemen then shook hands with every member of staff. Among those who they greeted were a number of old employees, including Mr.George Morgan, who has 52 years service, and whose father and mother had both worked for the Firm before him.

Other veterans were four members of the Ruffel family, all of whom have worked for the Firm for more than 30 years, and who are now joined by two members of the next generation. Others having 30 years service or more were Mr.W.Filmore (Director), Mr.S.J.Neale (Secretary), and Messrs.A.J.Mulhall, Edward Morgan, R.Eagle, A.Vacher, A.Vinden, W.Nash and W.Lambden, also Mrs.Hawkins and Miss Lily Child.
