THE Globe in the Market Square is a beautiful example of an old English coaching inn and it's very pleasing to see that an opportunity arises for its rejuvenation.
I hope that the successful tenant will consider paying tribute in some part of it's refurbishment to one of it's brightest periods in mid 20th century when it was run by television personality and sports presenter Richard 'Dickie' Davies with his wife Liz and her mother Doris.
The Globe at that time from the 1960s was enjoyed as a nice drinking and socialising place by many local and business people, and the bonus was that you could occasionally spot Dickie's visiting friends from the entertainment world dropping in to support their colleague in his venture.
When at that time I was working for Squires I often used to get asked to sort out the Davies' H-Fi system and help source music for the sound system in the two bars.
In the course of all this I would often have the opportunity to chat with Dickie and the family. Dickie's wife Liz had worked in television and her mother Doris had also been in the entertainment industry. Altogether they certainly gave the whole place a very memorable showbiz pizzazz.
