A JOURNALISM student from Penton Mewsey has been given the chance of a lifetime after securing a coveted work placement at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Rachel Coombes, aged 31, a third year journalism student at University College for the Creative Arts in Farnham, is the first ever non-Canadian to be given a placement on the Outfront documentary radio programme and will go to Toronto for a month from 15 February.

She went through a strict selection process to get the placement, including analysing Outfront programmes, compiling a blog and completing a 45-minute interview with the programme's producer.

She said: "They want me to make something to air on CBC while I'm over there so I'm a bit petrified, but it's what I have been working toward for the last four years so it's great."

Rachel's lecturer Amanda King said: "This is a huge coup for Rachel and the university.

"They are widely considered to be the best in the world who lead in the field of radio documentary work.

"Uniquely, all of the stories come from the Canadian public, and the team put them together in a hugely creative fashion for a radio audience.

"She has proved her ability and commitment to her future career and I am delighted for her and enormously proud of her."
