YOUNGSTERS from Whitchurch Scouts have been chosen for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent the county's branch in the USA next year.

Eleven of 1st Whitchurch Scouts will be jetsetting to West Virginia for the 24th World Scout Jamboree in July 2019, but must first face the challenge of fundraising towards the cost.

The young adventurers have been working towards their goal with a monthly car wash, but also by doing odd jobs, organising Bingo nights, making and selling crafts and more.

A 'Wine, Dine and Dance' evening is also taking place on October 13 at Testbourne Community School's sports hall.

Nikki Farley, scout leader of 1st Whitchurch Scouts, said: "I am immensely proud of the scouts from Whitchurch.

"20 scouts went to the selection weekend with nearly 300 from Hampshire and 13 were selected which is amazing.

"It shows that we have succeeded in giving them a taste of what scouting has to offer.

"Scouting and the Jamboree experience gives scouts so many skills for life. From confidence in talking to people, to fundraising and of course trying amazing activities while building new friendships."

Aged 13-16, Thomas Lamb, Archie Smith, Daniel Perceval, Toby Crapper, Luke Robins, Alice Gibb, Beth Jenkins, Zara Crapper, Scott Baker, Harrison Neill and Ryan Tigwell will make up 11 out of the 144 representing the Hampshire County Scouts.

Approximately 45,000 scouts from 200 countries will be attending the festivities which take place every four years.

The Jamboree, which is the largest event organised by the World Organisation of the Scout Movement, will last 12 days as a "life-changing adventure" for young people from across the world to come together, promote peace and understanding among youths from different cultures.

The car washes take place the first Sunday of each month from 10am to 3pm, and the next is taking place on Sunday, October 7 at the Whitchurch Scout Hut, Bere Hill in Whitchurch.

Tea, coffee, bacon rolls and homemade cakes are available, with suggested donations of £6 for wash and £12 for wash, valet and cup of tea.
