AN ANDOVER school is celebrating a prestigious mark which recognises the quality of its geography teaching.

Rookwood School, in Weyhill Road, is one of only 24 schools in 2018 to receive the Secondary Geography Quality Mark from the Geographical Association.

Following a rigorous moderation and assessment process, Rookwood School was re-accredited the quality mark for its approach and commitment to teaching and learning in geography.

The award recognised student attainment, progress and achievement within this subject throughout the school as well as excellent GSCE results.

Rookwood was previously awarded the Geography Mark in 2015 and the accreditation lasts for a three-year period.

Commenting on the importance of this award Alan Kinder, chief executive of the Geographical Association said: “There has never been a more important time for all children and young people to study geography.

“Growing up in the 21st century means living in an increasingly interconnected world, one facing a growing number of global challenges such as climate change and the need to live our lives sustainably. geography not only fascinates and inspires young people, it provides them with the knowledge and understanding they need to live in the modern world.”

Anthony Kirk-Burgess, headmaster of Rookwood School, added: “We are delighted to once again receive the Secondary Geography Quality Mark from the Geographical Association. This award is testament to the hard work and passion of our Geography Department as well as our students’ enthusiasm and appetite for learning within this subject. It also underlines our commitment to providing the very best learning opportunities for our pupils across all areas of the curriculum.

“I would like to congratulate our geography teacher, Mrs Hannah Willcox for all her work towards securing this prestigious award for Rookwood School. I am immensely proud of this achievement.”
