NORTH Hampshire MPs have given the prime minister their backing as Theresa May fights to save her leadership of the Conservative party.

Basingstoke MP Maria Miller and north west Hampshire MP Kit Malthouse have both publicly said they will support Mrs May, who faces a fight to keep her role amid her handling of the UK’s exit from the European Union.

A vote of no confidence will be held at the House of Commons at 6pm tonight (December 12), in which both Mrs Miller and Mr Malthouse said they would back the prime minister.

In a tweet Mrs Miller said: “I will be supporting the Prime Minister in the vote tonight. She has worked to deliver the best Brexit deal for this country. She deserves our full support.”

This view was echoed by north west Hampshire MP, Mr Malthouse, who retweeted a tweet from home secretary Sajid Javid, which said: “The last thing our country needs right now is a Conservative Party leadership election.”

Mr Malthouse responded: “Hear hear.”

Speaking outside Number 10, Mrs May said that changing Conservative leader would "put our country's future at risk and create uncertainty when we can least afford it" and could lead to Brexit being delayed or prevented.
