ANDOVER COUNTY BENCH

OBSCENE LANGUAGE.—Mary S-----, wife of William S-----, of St.Mary Bourne was summoned by [illegible] Miller for using obscene language on the nights of the 28th ult.—Mr.Longman, on her behalf, pleaded guilty, saying that she was under provocation at the manner in which her husband was being treated. Written statements were handed in giving the language used, which was declared to be of a most filthy character.—She was fined 10s. and 7s. costs, the Bench describing her as a filthy-mouthed woman, and the language as abominable.

DRUNK AND REFUSING TO QUIT.—William S-----, hawker of St.Mary Bourne, was summoned by Eliza Baiden, landlady of the Crown Inn, Hustbourne Tarrant [sic], for being drunk and disorderly and refusing to quit licensed premises on the 26th ult.—Mr.Longman, on defendant’s behalf, pleaded guilty, and while tendering his regret, said the complainant did not come out of the matter with clean hands, as defendant was allowed to have his drink there.—On the other hand, complainant said he came in at four o’clock and wanted to fight, when she refused to serve him.—At six o’clock he came again, when on account of his conduct she sent for the police. She only served him a quart of ale that day, which was about twelve o’clock.—Fined 20s. and 7s. costs.

ASSAULT.—Thomas S-----, son of the previous defendants, was summoned for an assault on William Brewer on the 26th ult.—William Brewer said that on the day in question, when standing outside the Crown Inn, Upton, the defendant came out, and hitting him in the eye knocked him against a carriage that was standing near. He had not spoken to defendant, nor were they bad friends.—Defendant said that when he got to the Crown he saw them throwing his father out, and heard defendant say “Put him out, and I’ll give it [illegible]. Complainant said he had been in the house but had scarce assisted in putting him out.—Fined 20s. and 7s. costs.

“THANK YOU, CANADA” — EVACUATED CHILDREN ENJOY THEMSELVES AT ANDOVER

The Lord Mayor’s National Air Raid Distress Fund has received special donations for the provision of Children’s Parties to children evacuated from their homes. Most of the money which has been so generously given comes from Canada. Very few of the evacuated children remained in Andover for Christmas, but those who did enjoyed Tuesday afternoon, the 4th January. Of these children quite a fair proportion had spent their fifth Christmas in Andover. A room was lent, and an excellent tea provided by the Andover Co-operative Society Ltd. Carnival caps were found on an outsize Christmas cracker, and community singing worked up a marvellous appetite for tea, at which the Mayor (Councillor S.H.Lawes) presided. The Town Clerk was delayed and arrived later, but the Chief Billeting Officer and his staff, who had made all the arrangements for the afternoon, were able to be present throughout the proceedings. The Mayor, in a few kindly and well-chosen words, explained to the children how the festivities had been provided: expressed his thanks to those who care for their welfare in Andover, and gave them sound advice for their future. He also presented Savings Stamps to the value of 2/6 to each child. After all this, Mr.Holland at the piano, and Mr.Swainson with his violin, provided music for games and more community singing till the time came for the children to return to their billets.

ANOTHER ROUND TABLE?

King Arthur and his Knights are coming to Andover!

The King together with Sir Galahad, Sir Launcelot and Sir Agravaine will be followed by Queen Guinevere and the wizard Merlin. Courts in the new housing estate on the West of the Newbury Road will bear the names of these chivalrous gentlemen and beautiful lady. Two other names connected with the ancient legend of Arthur will also be used-Camelot and Tintagel. This was the idea of the town clerk, Mr.J.Whatley, and it was put to a meeting of the Borough Council’s Housing Committee on Thursday evening. They were delighted with the suggestion although Cllr.Mrs.Q.A.Thorne did wonder for a minute whether the name Agravaine might prove to be rather “aggravating.” But the other councillors were not at all aggravated and all the names were accepted!
