A GRATELEY woman died when she fell down a ravine while hiking, an inquest has heard.

Elizabeth Orchard, pictured, was walking on her own when the accident happened in a forested area in the 122,000 hectares National Park Yanachaga-Chem Illen, in Peru.

A huge search was launched for the 25-year-old when she failed to return, the national press has reported.

Nearly a week later she was found dead by a search team at the bottom of the Sotomayor ravine after suffering multiple traumatic injuries.

An inquest into Elizabeth’s death was opened at Salisbury Coroner’s Court.

It is understood that the environmental volunteer had been hiking with her sister and sister’s boyfriend before the accident occurred on May 31.

A date is yet to be fixed for a full hearing.
